Striping video clip data over many physical resources (typically disk drives) balances video server load with less data replication. Current striped video delivery algorithms can have high start-up latency if the load is high. We propose a new, fast start-up algorithm, PASTENSE. This algorithm minimizes start-up latency by using aggressive prefetching to exploit disk idle time, and using available RAM to dynamically optimize the newly requested video's schedule. Our proposed method (a) does not require changes in the existing striped data placement (b) it never performs worse than alternate designs and (c) it achieves significant benefits: up to 9 times faster start-up times for high loads.

Whether animals can learn symbols, use them representationally and abstractly, and use them to solve problems remain questions of high interest. Research since the mid-1960s, but particularly during the 1980s, indicates that chimpanzees are capable of mastering and using symbols in ways that parallel human use of words (Savage-Rumbaugh, 1986, 1987; Savage-Rumbaugh, McDonald, Sevcik, Hopkins, & Rubert, 1986; Savage-Rumbaugh, Sevcik, Brakke, Rumbaugh, & Greenfield, 1990). In accordance with the comparative perspective, the bases for human cognitive competence appear to be shared in significant part with our nearest living relatives, the great apes, Pongidae (Rumbaugh, 1990b). Those findings are, in turn, part of a growing number of comparative psychological studies that document impressive cognitive operations of animals and birds in general (e.g., Roitbiat, Bever, & Terrace, 1984).

The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for its use by which a master video signal is recored and reproduced in registry with other video signals, entailing no loss in synchronization upon reproduction irrespective of speed. Comparatively long term composite video signals are recorded on a multi-channel longitudinal tape recorder, with distinct channels of processed synchronization signals in spatial registry on the same tape. The comparatively low fundamental frequency of the vertical synchronization signal is precisely recorded and reproduced by FM processing. Spatial registry of video and synchronization signals on the longitudinal tape corresponds to perfect temporal registry upon reproduction.

The Photogrammetric Appendage Structural Dynamics Experiment (PASDE) is anInternational Space Station (ISS) Phase-1 risk mitigation experiment. The purpose of the experiment is to demonstrate the use of photogrammetric techniques for determination of structural dynamic mode parameters of solar arrays and other spacecraft appendages. The objective of the first flight of PASDE, on STS-74 in November 1995, was to obtain video images of Mir Kvant-2 solar array response to various structural dynamic excitation events. More than 113 minutes of high quality structural response video data was collected during the mission.

The frame resolution of the video is determined by the camera that created it. Information exists about the camera which can be used to increase frame resolution beyond the resolution capability of the camera. This is achieved by a process called super-resolution, which uses multiple low- resolution video frames to create one high-resolution image.
